Equipment guidelines

Before buying equipment, you should use the planning guidelines to determine the following values:

  • N = Number of kiosks
  • V = number of vehicles
  • M = number of megabytes/day of transfer per user
  • C = number of gateways

We assume below that you want to set up several recycled PCs in each kiosk as public access terminals. This reduces the per-terminal cost, since each kiosk should only need one single board computer (SBC), hard disk, solar panel, etc.

  • Serial terminal OR RS232-USB Dongle+Emulator
  • Digital multimeter or electrical continuity tester
  • Coaxial cable cutters
  • Crimp tool, ratcheting style
  • Crimp tool "die" with hex sizes .429, .128, and .100
  • Long-nosed pliers
  • Small wire cutters
  • Single-sided razor blade
  • Scissors

Equipment to be Purchased In-Country

Kiosk

  • a basic switch, hub or router
  • ethernet cable

Ferry

  • Foam to protect ferry soekris from vibration
  • cord to secure ferry to vehicle
  • Power Source for Ferry
    • Option 1: DC-AC inverter, to transform car battery output to required input for Soekris
    • Option 2: Car cigarette lighter to AC plug: to power the soekris

Power

If the power source at the kiosk or gateway is regularly interrupted for short intervals, you will need a UPS at that location. If power is not readily available or is very unreliable, you may want to install solar panels. This will require the following additional equipment:

  • Solar Panels, such as the Powerflex panels suggested above in the equipment list
  • Car battery or other charge controller
  • Alligator clips and cable (25 gauge or less) to attach to car battery
