Piki

How to make your own piki

Prerequisites

You will need a server running MySQL and PHP (or at least the ability to create a database on a MySQL database somewhere).

You will also need MediaWiki-1.4.7: a tarball is here (http://blizzard.cs.uwaterloo.ca/piki1.0/wiki/mediawiki-1.4.7.tar.gz).

Steps

  1. Install MediaWiki (http://sourceforge.net/projects/wikipedia). Follow the installation guidelines (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Installation) carefully.
  2. Once you have installed MediaWiki (and moved LocalSettings.php from the config directory to the main directory), download the Piki tarball (http://blizzard.cs.uwaterloo.ca/piki1.0/wiki/piki.tar.gz)
  3. Unzip and untar the tarball. You will get a directory called 'piki'.
  4. Copy piki/LocalSettings.php just before the ?> at the end of your LocalSettings.php file
  5. Copy piki/CologneBlue.php to skins/CologneBlue.php. You need to make one edit to this file, and that is to choose the name of your Piki.
  6. Copy piki/cologneblue.css to skins/common/cologneblue.css
  7. Copy piki/sidebar.txt to skins
  8. Copy piki/*.php to the includes directory
  9. From the top level directory, execute 'chown -R apache *', 'chgrp -R apache *' to make sure the ownership is correct
  10. Ensure that all the new files you create are chmodded to 755

Known bug: If you log in to the site and the look and feel doesn't match your piki's look and feel, you will need to go to the 'preferences' page (under Special Pages->more) and change the default style from 'monobook' to 'cologneblue'

If you run into trouble, feel free to ask for help.
